There’s a new type of metal on the market: Humanium, made entirely from destroyed illegal firearms. Its purpose is threefold: first, it destroys illegal firearms, one of the world’s biggest and most pressing problems; second, it creates the first supply chain that brings a new kind of “conscious” metal to brands, artists, designers and challenges them to find ways to use it; and third, it generates local income and creates a new source of funding for victims of armed violence, the rebuilding of conflict torn societies and poorly-funded weapon destruction programs.

The objective was to create a market driven initiative where the private sector would gain a clear business value by investing in Humanium metal and thereby removing illegal firearms from society and generate resources to help victims of armed violence and help rebuild conflict-torn societies. IM is a Swedish development organisation with over 50 years of experience from regions where illegal firearms stands in the way of aid, development and progress. An innovative approach was need to break through politics and red tape. The Humanium Metal Initiative has established a sustainable infrastructure and supply chain that meet the production and investment demands of commercial partners. As of March 2017, production has been initiated in Guatemala and El Salvador in cooperation with local governments and authorities. Negotiations are underway in additional Latin American countries.
