For people living with schizophrenia, it can feel like another episode is just around the corner. Experiencing an increase in symptoms affects more than just spending time in the hospital -- it effectively sidelines almost every part of their life. And for the 2.4 million American adults with schizophrenia, it happens an alarming average of nine times in under six years. In order to help patients delay another episode, Janssen is working to increase awareness of long-acting injections, a treatment that could do just that. This treatment awareness campaign harnesses the raw, emotional stories of those who have made the change to once-monthly injection, turning those real stories into animated videos. The overall style takes on a vivid graphic novel feel, inspired by of the kind of artwork that people living with schizophrenia sometimes create and seek out online. Additionally, the animation mirrors each storyteller’s experience of symptoms, moving from a dark, surreal style to a lighter, less chaotic, realistic look in describing recovery. The messaging of the videos compel prospective patients to stop just waiting for another episode to happen, and consider if a change in their treatment plan could make the difference.
