História Child rape is a widespread epidemic in Kenya with a girl being raped every 30 minutes. There are little or no repercussions for the rapists. To make matters worse, while rape is illegal, the very officials in charge of protecting them often assault the victims. 160 Girls Project is a legal initiative that aims to change that. In May 2013, 160 girls won a landmark victory against the Kenyan police, who have now been ordered to properly investigate any crimes of rape against girls or face imprisonment, ensuring the enforcement of the laws.
Filosofia While rape is illegal in Kenya, rapists are rarely prosecuted. In 2013, 160 Girls secured a landmark court order ensuring the enforcement of the laws. We wanted to highlight this social change in front of girls, officials and potential rapists.
We needed to raise awareness about this landmark ruling. We needed women and girls to realize that there was now hope for them. A secondary objective was to let rapists and potential rapists know that things were changing and there would be increased consequences for their actions.
Problema We needed to convey the reprecussions of the court's decision. We went to the centre of the major town where a marathon would be held. There we erected a single billboard - all that we could afford - that read the horrible truth: “Justice is nowhere for child rape victims.” On the day of the marathon, in front of multitudes of girls, officials, celebrities and potential rapists, we got the region's Senator to walk up to the billboard and paint a slash through the word “nowhere”, transforming the message into one of hope: “Justice is now here for child rape victims.”
Resultado According to Ripples International (a Kenyan rape shelter), there has been an increase in reports of rape/defilement to the police. Unfortunately they do not have the resources to quantify or collect hard data.
