Leading by Example: MCC's Pam Watknis

Pam Watknis
SVP, Business and Media Strategy MCC

How would you describe the overall culture at your agency and would you say that there is a separate female culture?

We have a very team oriented culture. We are one team and don’t have a separate and distinct female culture.

In your opinion, what do you see as being the biggest change in the advertising industry since women have begun to break the “glass ceiling”?

Women have established themselves in every aspect of the business and are no longer relegated to support positions. Their talent and contributions are valued and opportunity is open to everyone in most cases.

What are some of the challenges that women still face in the industry?

I think women in advertising face challenges with legacy bias that some individuals still carry.  However, it seems more and more rare these days.

What steps do you take to ensure you achieve a healthy work-life balance?

I make sure that I leave the office at a reasonable hour most every day. I make commitments outside of work so that I must go, even if that means I have to finish up a high priority project at home later in the evening. My inclination always is to stay late and clear my desk and I have to impose a certain amount of discipline to maintain a balance.

What professional achievement are you most proud of?

I am most proud that have been able to consistently gain more and more leadership responsibility to deliver for the organizations I worked for and have been able to mentor those who have followed to do the same.

Tell us about a mentor that helped guide you in your career. What made them so special?

I have had many excellent mentors through the years but my most influential was a man, who gave me direct, candid feedback and guidance. He treated me as he did his other reports, who for the most part were men. That gave the insight, direction and opportunity to compete with anyone.

How do you as a successful woman plan to inspire the next generation of women?

I believe leading by example. Most importantly, I work to support young women through mentorship and sponsorship.
