VW’s Carbon Light Website

Anyone who reads the news knows that VW doesn’t exactly have an unblemished record when it comes to carbon emissions. But then – neither do the rest of us. While we’re posting angrily about climate change on our smartphones, we’re accessing energy-munching servers that have a carbon footprint as big as the airline industry. Via its agency Taxi in Toronto, VW decided to combat this problem on the launch website of its new electric SUV. All the site’s visuals were ditched and then painstakingly recreated in ASCII code, using more than 1.5 million characters. According to a website carbon calculator, the site was 99% cleaner than the average site, proving that the brand not only offers cleaner vehicles, but is taking steps towards sustainable communications.
